Moving from 1C to Odoo: A Plan for Migrating Data Without Losses

Many companies postpone switching systems because they fear losing years of data stored in 1C. With a step-by-step plan, the move becomes safe and controlled.

Moving from 1C to Odoo: A Plan for Migrating Data Without Losses

For years, 1C has been the main accounting system for many companies in Uzbekistan. But as a business grows, it needs to see sales, inventory, manufacturing and customer work in one system. That's when many start considering Odoo — and the first question is always the same: "What happens to our existing data?"

What to migrate — and what not to

You don't have to move everything. What usually must be migrated: customers and suppliers, products (name, SKU, unit of measure, barcode), current stock levels, open receivables and payables, and opening balances for the chart of accounts.

Moving every document from previous years is usually unnecessary. For historical reports, it's simpler and safer to keep the 1C database as a read-only archive.

Step 1: Clean up the data

Before migrating, tidy up the 1C data: merge duplicate contacts, remove unused product cards and bring names to a consistent format. Skip this step and the old mess moves into the new system with you.

Step 2: Map the structure

1C and Odoo organise data differently. Product categories, warehouses, the chart of accounts and tax settings need to be rebuilt to fit Odoo's structure. It's also a good moment to review your processes — some old workarounds simply aren't needed in Odoo.

Step 3: Test import

Data is exported to Excel or CSV and first loaded into a test database. Odoo's standard import tool lets you map columns to fields. In the test database, stock levels, balances and product counts are reconciled against 1C, and any differences are found and fixed.

Step 4: Pick a go-live date

The start of a month or quarter works best. On that date, closing balances are taken from 1C and entered into Odoo as opening balances. From then on, every new transaction happens only in Odoo. Keep any period of running both systems in parallel as short as possible — otherwise staff get confused.

Step 5: Train the team

Even a perfectly configured system is useless if people can't work with it. Each department is trained on its own tasks: sales on CRM and quotations, warehouse staff on receipts and deliveries, accounting on invoices and reports.

Bottom line

Moving from 1C to Odoo isn't a one-day job, but with the right plan no data is lost and the business keeps running. In a free audit, we'll review your current 1C database and prepare a clear plan for what to migrate and how.
